The San Damiano Cross is the large, Romanesque cross before which St. Francis was kneeling when the Lord appeared to him and commissioned him to rebuild Christ's Church. It is an 'icon cross' because images other than the figure of Christ are painted on the cross. Franciscans around the world view this cross, the original of which still hangs in the Basilica of St. Clare (founder of female Franciscan convents) in Assisi, Italy.
